Preparation Essentials

The Proper Bin

Ventilated plastic or wooden container
Minimum 12 inches deep for layering
Opaque material to keep worms in the dark

Bedding Essentials

Shredded non-glossy cardboard or newspaper
Coconut coir or peat moss for moisture
A handful of garden soil for grit

Moisture Control

Spray bottle for fine misting
De-chlorinated or rainwater

Ideal Environment

Temperature: 55°F to 77°F
Away from direct sunlight and rain

STEP 01

Get a Bin Ready

Pick a sturdy bin and make sure it has plenty of air holes. Your worms need to breathe just like us, so keep it well-ventilated and tucked away in a dark, quiet spot where they can get to work comfortably.

STEP 02

Build Their Home

Tear up some old newspaper or cardboard and get it wet. Squeeze it out so it is damp but not dripping. This soft, moist bedding gives your worms a perfect place to sleep, hide, and stay cool throughout the day.

STEP 03

Move the Worms In

Set your red wigglers right on top and let them find their own way down. They are a bit shy at first, so don't worry if they head straight for the bottom; they are just getting settled into their new environment.

STEP 04

Feed Lightly and Watch

Just give them a handful of scraps to start. If they eat it all, give them a bit more. The biggest mistake is overfeeding, so just watch how they act and let them tell you when they are hungry for seconds. It might take them a few days or a week to adjust to their new home.
